A comprehensive coverage of the fundamental concepts of classical thermodynamics. Behavior of real substances, units and thermodynamic properties. The laws of thermodynamics. Equations of state. Entropy and enthalpy, ideal and real processes. Thermodynamic analysis of common power and refrigeration cycles. Stoichiometric combustion basics.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Describe one of the core competencies required of BSME students.
  • Have the ability to independently identify, formulate and solve technical problems.
  • Be able to apply technical knowledge of thermodynamics to national security issues.
  • Know the fundamental definitions of thermodynamic terms and concepts.
  • Determine thermodynamic states and properties of a system.
  • Identify open and closed thermodynamic systems.
  • Use the First and Second Laws in control mass (closed) and control volume (open) systems to calculate changes in thermodynamic systems.
  • Calculate the efficiencies and specific work of common ideal and real power systems, including steam and ideal gas cycles, such as steam turbines, spark-ignition and compression ignition, gas-turbine cycles.
  • Calculate Coefficient of Performance (COP) for vapor compression and similar systems for refrigeration and heat pumps.
  • Use generalized thermodynamic relationships, such as Maxwell’s Relations, to calculate properties and changes in properties.
