Overview

This course introduces students to foundational techniques for preparing and analyzing data.  Each week, students will learn one or more concepts, and then apply acquired skills in a structured learning exercise. Topics include: pivot tables, visualization, data storage and retrieval, computer programming, summary statistics, and an introduction to probability and probability distributions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should:

  • Be able to visualize data with a variety of tables / plots / charts / graphs.

  • Have a deeper understanding of how computer programming enables analytics, including the use of logical statements and loops.

  • Be able to select appropriate summary statistics, compute them, and explain results observed.

  • Use the laws of probability to calculate the likelihood of certain events, including conditional probabilities.

  • Understand the basics of probability distributions.
