Overview

This course addresses the study and practice of counseling. It explores the academic counseling resources available at the United States Naval Academy, the difference between counseling and coaching, and the elements of constructive counseling/coaching sessions. Students will work directly with midshipmen and engage in targeted counseling/coaching.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete this course will have:

  • a working understanding of fundamental public health prevention principles and the socio-ecological model and their role in prevention in a military service academy environment.
  • an understanding of the support services available at USNA and resources that help to mitigate the disruptive behaviors such as alcohol abuse, eating disorders, suicide and sexual assault and harassment.  
  • the ability to discern between mentoring, counseling and coaching, and therapy.
  • the confidence to positively engage with Midshipmen in a constructive mentoring, counseling and coaching sessions that will benefit the Midshipmen individually and contribute to the success of their company.
